<p>It can be challenging for our aging loved ones to remember if and when they’ve taken their medication, especially if they have several prescriptions and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs at home. But taking medication at the right times, in the right doses, is <a href="https://safethomecare.com/in-home-medication-management/">essential for seniors’ health and wellness</a>.</p>



<p>Your loved one may want to stay in control of their medications, but they might be worried about keeping track of everything. With our seven medication management tips, you can help them stay safe, healthy, and informed.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Keep all medications in one place.</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.uptodate.com/contents/drug-prescribing-for-older-adults" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Research</a> shows that 87 percent of older adults take one prescription drug, 36 percent use five or more medications, and 38 percent take OTC drugs. Keeping track of all these medications may be difficult for your family member, especially if their pill bottles are scattered throughout the house.</p>



<p>But putting all your loved one’s medicine and supplements in one place (like their nightstand or kitchen counter) can help them feel less overwhelmed. Try gathering all their pill bottles into a <a href="https://dailycaring.com/medication-management-for-seniors-10-safety-tips/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clear storage bin or gallon-sized plastic bag</a>. Along with keeping their medications organized, your family member will know at a glance what they’re taking.</p>

<p>Although many bathrooms have a medicine cabinet above the sink, that’s actually <em>not </em>a great place for your loved one’s pill bottles. Medications should typically be stored in a <a href="https://dailycaring.com/medication-management-for-seniors-10-safety-tips/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dry, room-temperature spot</a>, not in a place prone to moisture and heat (like a bathroom). But your family member’s nightstand or kitchen counter are safe storage options.</p>



<p>For any prescriptions that require specific storage, like <a href="https://www.drugs.com/medical-answers/drugs-that-require-cold-storage-166784/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">refrigerating insulin or eye drops</a>, just follow instructions from your loved one’s doctor and pharmacist. Finally, make sure you keep all their medication <a href="https://www.singlecare.com/blog/medication-management-for-seniors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">away from pets and children</a>, even if the bottles have childproof caps.</p>

<p>Knowing exactly which medications your loved one is taking will help them avoid <a href="https://www.fda.gov/drugs/resources-you-drugs/drug-interactions-what-you-should-know" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">negative drug interactions</a> (unexpected side effects). An excellent way to do this is by creating a record of their medicines and updating it when necessary.</p>

This is helpful if your family member takes a dose of one medication in the morning, and a dose of another medication in the evening.</p>

Then, they won’t have to worry about remembering to split them or using a pill cutter when it’s time to take their medication.</p>

You can ask their doctor for a 90-day supply through a mail-order pharmacy, or one with delivery services. Then, you only have to remember to re-order every few months, and the medication will come right to your loved one’s door.</p>



<p>If delivery services aren’t an option for your family member’s pharmacy, just mark the refill dates on your calendar so you can order and pick up their prescription(s) on time. <p>Whether your loved one was just diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, or they’ve been dealing with the condition for a while now, you may have questions about what to expect and how you can support them.</p>



<p>In a previous interview, Judy Kanelos of Safe-T Home Care discussed the <a href="https://safethomecare.com/four-as-alzheimers/">four A’s of Alzheimer’s</a>: agitation, anxiety, aggression, and apathy. She also shared signs that caregivers should look for, as well as practical tips to guide seniors through the mental and emotional changes this condition brings.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How They May Feel or Act</h3>



<p>Your family member is <a href="https://www.alz.org/help-support/caregiving/stages-behaviors/anxiety-agitation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">losing their ability to process</a> new information and stimuli, which is understandably quite frustrating for them. As a result, they may get agitated as they struggle to express what they think or feel. Loud noises, hunger, lack of sleep, pain, and simply being too hot or too cold can <a href="https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/about-dementia/symptoms-and-diagnosis/symptoms/restlessness" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">set off agitation</a> in your loved one.</p>



<p>Dealing with <a href="https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/coping-agitation-and-aggression-alzheimers-disease" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">loss or change</a> can also frustrate and overwhelm your family member. For example, they probably miss the freedom of driving, or the ease of remembering people and events. Your loved one may also experience <a href="https://safethomecare.com/five-signs-depression-older-adults/">depression</a> as they face the reality of growing older and navigating the challenges that Alzheimer’s brings.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How You Can Help Them</h3>



<p>One of the best things you can do for your loved one is to <a href="https://www.alz.org/help-support/caregiving/stages-behaviors/anxiety-agitation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">make sure they’re comfortable</a>. Try asking them questions (calmly, and one at a time) to figure out what they need to feel better. Are they tired, hungry, thirsty, or in pain? Do they need to use the restroom? Is the house too warm or too cold?</p>



<p><a href="https://www.alz.org/help-support/caregiving/stages-behaviors/anxiety-agitation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Limiting stimulation and potential triggers</a> can also help you prevent agitation in your loved one. For instance, if a TV show in the background will overstimulate or distract them, turn off the television and have a conversation with them. Listen to their frustrations, and let your family member know you’re there for them.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How They May Feel or Act</h3>



<p>Someone with Alzheimer’s may become <a href="https://www.alz.org/help-support/caregiving/stages-behaviors/anxiety-agitation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">restless</a> and want to pace or move around. Your loved one might also feel <a href="https://www.alz.org/help-support/caregiving/stages-behaviors/anxiety-agitation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exhausted and scared</a> from trying to make sense of the confusing world around them. Or, they may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, making them even more prone to exhaustion and anxiety.</p>



<p>In the <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/alzheimers-disease/beyond-memory-loss-how-to-handle-the-other-symptoms-of-alzheimers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early stages of Alzheimer’s</a>, your loved one will probably be anxious about the seriousness of the disease, as well as the loss of memory and independence they’ll face. Later on, they may feel anxious about being left alone or <a href="https://safethomecare.com/four-as-alzheimers/">knowing a change in routine is coming</a> — even if they can’t remember what that change is.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How You Can Help Them</h3>



<p>Support your loved one by creating a <a href="https://safethomecare.com/home-care-safety-tips/">calm, safe home environment</a>. They’ll have peace of mind knowing they can relax in their own house. If they’re fidgety, giving them a soft toy to <a href="https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/about-dementia/symptoms-and-diagnosis/symptoms/restlessness" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">keep their hands busy</a> can help. You can also guide your family member through a few <a href="https://safethomecare.com/safe-easy-exercises-seniors/">safe and easy exercises</a> so they can burn off some energy.</p>



<p>Your loved one will also appreciate you giving them <a href="https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/coping-agitation-and-aggression-alzheimers-disease" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">as much independence as possible</a>. Let them feed, bathe, and dress themselves for as long as they can. When the time comes for you to step in and assist them, doing these things at the same time each day or week will help your loved one adjust to the change.</p>

<p>It’s challenging to cope with a loved one who can be <a href="https://www.alz.org/help-support/caregiving/stages-behaviors/agression-anger" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">verbally or physically aggressive</a>, whether that’s due to a challenging situation or for no apparent reason. <a href="https://www.alz.org/help-support/caregiving/stages-behaviors/agression-anger" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer’s-related aggression</a> can come from pain, physical discomfort, a loud or unfamiliar environment, and/or poor communication or frustration from their caregiver.</p>

They don’t mean to be aggressive, but it’s important to protect yourself and your loved one in these situations so nobody gets hurt.</p>

<p>Make sure your loved one feels comfortable, calm, and safe (like you’d do for an agitated senior). One way to do this is by playing <a href="https://safethomecare.com/tips-for-using-music-to-help-a-loved-one-with-dementia-or-alzheimers/">music</a> to soothe your family member and redirect their focus to a favorite song or two. If you think your <em>own</em> stress or irritability is setting off their aggression, take a deep breath and try to relax.</p>



<p>If necessary, <a href="https://www.alz.org/help-support/caregiving/stages-behaviors/agression-anger" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stay a safe distance away</a> from your loved one until their aggressive behavior stops — using a soft, positive tone of voice as you reassure them that everything’s okay. At the same time, try to keep them in your line of sight, so you can ensure they don’t accidentally hurt themselves.</p>

<p>You may notice that a loved one with Alzheimer’s has become less energetic, sociable, and/or motivated to do things they used to enjoy. They’ve likely developed <a href="https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/about-dementia/symptoms-and-diagnosis/anxiety" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">apathy</a>, with symptoms that may include:&nbsp;</p>

If your loved one is depressed, they might have low self-esteem or feel sad, tearful, and/or hopeless.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/about-dementia/symptoms-and-diagnosis/anxiety" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Break down routines into small, manageable steps</a> that help your family member feel a sense of accomplishment once they complete a task. For example, if bathing is overwhelming to your loved one, you can split up this task into a few steps: going into the bathroom, running water, removing clothing, and stepping into the bath or shower.&nbsp;</p>



<p>You can also engage your family member in <a href="https://safethomecare.com/activities-parent-alzheimers/">activities they enjoy</a>, such as crafting, listening to music, or taking a walk. Above all, don’t accuse them of being lazy or uncaring. <ul class="wp-block-list"><li>2 Tbsp unsalted butter</li><li>1 medium yellow onion, diced</li><li>2 cloves garlic, minced</li><li>½ tsp kosher salt</li><li>¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper</li><li>1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar</li><li>4 cups (32 ounces) low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth</li><li>1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes</li><li>½ cup heavy cream</li><li>2 bay leaves</li><li>1 (14-ounce) package fresh or frozen cheese tortellini</li><li>½ cup fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced, plus more for garnish</li><li>Grated or shredded Parmesan cheese, for garnish (optional)</li></ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Instructions</h3>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Melt the butter in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, salt, and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally until tender, about 6 minutes.</li><li>Stir in the vinegar. Add the crushed tomatoes, broth, cream, and bay leaves, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and simmer for 5 minutes.&nbsp;</li><li>Add the tortellini and simmer until cooked through, 5 to 6 minutes more (check at 3 minutes for fresh tortellini).&nbsp;</li><li>Remove from the heat, remove and discard the bay leaves, and stir in the basil.&nbsp;</li><li>Ladle into bowls and top with Parmesan cheese and more basil, if desired.</li></ol>

<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>In a bowl, whisk all the ingredients for the dressing and set aside.</li><li>In a large bowl, add all the ingredients for the slaw and pour the dressing over.</li><li>Toss well and let sit for 10 minutes to let the cabbage soften a bit and absorb the flavor of the dressing.&nbsp;</li><li>Serve immediately, or refrigerate to serve the next day.</li></ol>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>1 (28-ounce) can of crushed tomatoes</li><li>2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil</li><li>½ tsp fine grain salt</li><li>2 cloves garlic, chopped</li><li>½ tsp red pepper flakes</li><li>Lemon zest</li><li>12 ounces fresh pasta sheets, cut into lasagna strips OR&nbsp;</li><li>9 ounces dried, whole wheat, no-boil lasagna sheets</li><li>1 cup cooked red lentils or cannellini beans (optional)</li><li>¼ cup chopped olives (optional)</li><li>4 ounces mozzarella cheese, torn</li></ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Instructions</h3>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Preheat the oven to 400° with a rack in the top third.</li><li>Combine the tomatoes, olive oil, salt, garlic, and red pepper flakes in a bowl and stir.</li><li>Spoon ¾ cup of the sauce into the bottom of an 8 x 12-inch, oven-proof baking dish. Sprinkle generously with lemon zest, and cover with a layer of pasta, giving the pasta strips a quick dunk in cold water before using.<ol><li>If you’re using no-boil noodles, you don’t have to dip them in water.</li></ol></li><li>Spoon another thin layer of tomato sauce, sprinkle with a few tablespoons of the lentils and olives (if using), and cover with another layer of pasta.&nbsp;</li><li>Repeat with more layers and end with a generous amount of tomato sauce on top. Finish with the mozzarella cheese on top.</li><li>Bake for 30 minutes, or until the cheese gets nicely golden.<ol><li>For no-boil noodles, cover the lasagna with foil and bake until pasta is tender (30-35 minutes).</li></ol></li></ol>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>2 Tbsp oil, divided</li><li>1 medium leek, white and light green parts thinly sliced</li><li>1 medium Yukon Gold potato</li><li>1 (16-ounce) bag frozen broccoli, or 1 large bunch broccoli (about 2 pounds), cut into small florets and stems discarded (or saved for another use)</li><li>6 cups low-sodium vegetable broth, low-sodium chicken broth, or water</li><li>1 cup shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese (4 ounces)</li><li>Salt</li><li>Freshly ground black pepper</li><li>Plain yogurt or a lemon wedge, for serving</li></ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Instructions</h3>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and heat to 450°. Heat 1 Tbsp of the oil in a large pot over medium heat until shimmering.&nbsp;</li><li>Add the leek and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 5 minutes.&nbsp;</li><li>Meanwhile, peel and chop the potato into 1-inch chunks. Add the broth or water and potato to the pot and bring to a boil.</li><li>Spread the broccoli out onto 2 baking pans. Drizzle the remaining 1 Tbsp of oil over the broccoli, sprinkle with a big pinch of salt and pepper, and roast for 5 minutes. Stir the broccoli and return to the oven for 5 more minutes.</li><li>Once the soup is boiling, add the broccoli and return to a boil. Reduce the heat as needed and simmer until the vegetables are tender when pierced with a fork, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from the heat.&nbsp;</li><li>Purée soup with an immersion blender or in batches with a regular blender.&nbsp;</li><li>Add the cheese and stir until melted. Taste and season with salt and pepper.</li><li>Serve topped with a small dollop of yogurt, or a squeeze of lemon, and finish with a grind of fresh pepper.</li></ol>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Instructions</h3>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Cut the tops off the peppers and remove the seeds. Place the peppers in a large saucepan and cover with water.&nbsp;</li><li>Bring to a simmer and cook for 3 minutes, just until the peppers are slightly soft. Drain, rinse with cool water, and set aside on paper towels to drain.</li><li>In a skillet, heat the ground beef (or turkey) and onion and cook until no pink remains. Drain.</li><li>Add the salt, pepper, rice, garlic powder, and half of the tomato sauce.</li><li>Stir well and spoon into the peppers.</li><li>Top with the other half of the tomato sauce.</li><li>Bake in an ungreased dish at 350 for 25-30 minutes. Serve warm.</li></ol>

<p>We’ve put together a list of adorable (and affordable) holiday crafts that take an hour or less to make. Many of these were created with children in mind, so your loved one can even work on these with the grandkids. And even if your parent or grandparent now struggles with their cognitive or motor skills, they can still complete these fun projects safely with a little help.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Instructions</h3>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Take three Styrofoam balls, then cut the bottom of the largest flat on one side.</li><li>Cut the medium-sized ball flat on two sides, then glue all three balls together.</li><li>Once your snowman stack is dry, unroll cotton balls and glue over the stack.</li><li>Mix two parts white glue and one part water. Paint over the cotton ball-covered stack, then add glitter (to look like sparkling snow).&nbsp;</li><li>Spray with adhesive if you have some on hand. Let dry.</li><li>Use the coffee cup as a base for your snowman’s top hat. Remove the bottom of the cup, then cut down the height of the cup.</li><li>Cover the cup with black card stock, then cut out the rim and top of the hat.&nbsp;</li><li>Glue the hat together, then trim with ribbon. Make holly leaves with green felt and berries with red beads to decorate the hat.</li><li>Add a ribbon scarf; buttons for the snowman’s smile, eyes, and stomach; and wire for his arms.&nbsp;</li><li>Finish your snowman with an orange felt carrot nose.</li><li>Display your snowman wherever you (and your guests) can admire him!</li></ol>

<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Loop brown burlap around the wreath frame, securing loops with chenille stems.</li><li>Repeat Step 1 with the red burlap, layering it over the brown burlap.</li><li>Cut strips of gingham ribbon and tie in between the burlap sections.</li><li>Tie a small bow at the bottom if you have room.&nbsp;</li><li>Cut off excess ribbon and/or burlap, or tuck it into the wreath.</li><li>Hang on your front door!</li></ol>

<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Remove the lid from a jar, then paint the lid with silver glitter or white spray paint.</li><li>Spray the mini trees and snowmen with glitter or white paint so they sparkle.</li><li>Hot glue your trees and snowmen to the lids. Let dry.</li><li>Add artificial snow, cornstarch, or baking soda to the jars. You only need enough to cover the bottom of the jar.</li><li>Make sure your trees and snowmen are glued tightly to the lid, then put the lid back onto the jar.</li><li>Turn over the jar, and let it snow!</li></ol>

<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Cut a small piece of blue tape for the shamash candle’s base, then cut a long piece that all nine candles will rest on. Attach these to the middle of the white construction paper.</li><li>Repeat Step 1 to cut and attach two more small pieces of blue tape (for the bottom of the menorah).</li><li>Cut nine equal-length strips of tape for your menorah candles.</li><li>Add four tape “candles” to the left of the shamash base and four to the right.</li><li>Place your ninth piece of tape on base for the shamash candle.</li><li>Cut out nine flames from the yellow construction paper.</li><li>Glue one flame above each candle.</li><li>Display your menorah for the whole Hanukkah celebration!</li></ol>

<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Using the fold of the white card stock as the tree’s center, draw half of a triangle (2 inches wide). Start just below the top of the card stock and end about an inch from the bottom.</li><li>Divide the triangle into four horizontal sections with wavy lines. Cut along each line.</li><li>Open the white card stock and flip the tree inside out, reinforcing the fold along the edges so the four sections point outwards (and so you can hide your pencil mark).</li><li>Glue the white card stock onto the blue card stock.&nbsp;</li><li>Decorate the tree with stickers and glitter glue. Let dry before closing the card.</li><li>Send your beautiful card to a friend or family member.&nbsp;</li></ol>

(The pot will sit upside down as a base for the bowl.)</li><li>Decorate the flowerpot base with ribbons, snowflake stickers and more.</li><li>Fill the bowl with peppermints, gumdrops, or another type of candy.</li><li>Place the ball-saucer lid on top of the bowl.</li><li>Share your candy with your family and friends.</li></ol>

But the holidays can be difficult for our older parents and grandparents who live alone, struggle with memory loss, or have mobility issues. <p>But your parent or grandparent can still enjoy the holiday season with a little extra love from you and your family. Here are five ways you can help your loved one feel appreciated and included during the holidays.</p>

There are emotional risks, such as isolation from friends and family when we’re stuck at home because of the cold, snow, or ice. But physical risks, like falls on an icy sidewalk or inside the house, can also make your loved one (and you) worry.</p>



<p>The good news: There are a few steps you can take to keep your parent or grandparent warm, safe, and healthy as the weather gets colder. Read on for five tips to prepare your loved one for winter.</p>

<p>Fireplaces, space heaters, and electric blankets are a great way to warm up during the winter, but they can <a href="https://www.bostonmagazine.com/health/2014/01/02/help-elderly-winter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lead to a fire</a> if left unattended. To help them in case of emergency, replace batteries in your loved one’s carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. It’s also a great idea to place a fire extinguisher near their stove and fireplace.</p>



<p>Next, you’ll want to fall-proof your parent or grandparent’s home as much as possible. Make sure you (or another friend or family member) are available to shovel snow from your loved one’s walkway. <p>This condition occurs when extreme cold damages the skin — sometime all the way to the bone. <strong>Warning signs of frostbite include:</strong></p>

<p><strong>To prevent or treat frostbite, your loved one should:</strong></p>

<p>Many people view aging as a negative and might even have a stigma against the elderly. According to Anne-Marie Botek of <a href="https://www.agingcare.com/articles/old-people-refuse-help-154617.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AgingCare</a>, “We equate advancing age with a host of undesirable traits, including dependence, forgetfulness, grumpiness, confusion, disengagement, and a lack of productivity.” No wonder we don’t want to admit we’re getting older and need help!</p>



<p>Your parent or grandparent may be a senior citizen now, but they still want others (including you) to treat them like a capable adult. The last thing you want to do is make your loved one feel incompetent or “old.” Make sure you respect their dignity, value, and desire for independence when you discuss helping their find support.</p>

<p>You should still be on the lookout for any health changes or daily struggles your loved one mentions so you can discuss them. And you can absolutely ask about their physical and emotional well-being. But don’t lecture your loved one about health and safety. They might consider your advice if you actually listen to what <em>they </em>have to say!</p>



<p>Make time to visit your loved one without distractions, or take them to their favorite restaurant or coffee shop. Ask your parent or grandparent about <a href="https://aetonix.com/2016/10/06/5-ways-to-talk-to-aging-parents-who-refuse-help/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">things that interest or matter to them</a> (not just their health). </p>



<p>Whether they want to talk about their friends, a new recipe they tried, or their favorite TV show, give them your undivided attention. This will help your loved one feel valued, and maybe they’ll open up about anything they’re struggling with.</p>

<p>Try to put yourself in your parent or grandparent’s shoes. They’re likely feeling a range of emotions: frustrated with their limitations, afraid of losing their independence, and so on. <p>For example, let’s say your loved one worries about burdening you with taking them to the doctor&#8217;s office. You could say, “I’d love to drive you to your appointment and spend the rest of the day with you.” They’ll be happy to spend quality time with you, and they’ll respond to this better than if you said, “You’re too old to drive!”</p>



<p>Or, what if your parent or grandparent fears the change and loss of control that comes with getting support? As with the previous example, you’ll want to stay away from “You can’t take care of things around the house by yourself anymore.” Instead, you could say, “With just a few hours of help each week, you can still live independently in your own home. And I’d have peace of mind knowing that you’re safe.”</p>
